You may have noticed a new brand on 3FLoz.com, LAQA & CO. LAQA & CO is our most recent discovery and if you haven’t heard of LAQA & CO get excited because I am about to change your DIY manis forever. Who knew painting your nails would become so convenient! We asked Co-founders Nicole and Gina to share their story and educate us on nail polish pens.
Where did the name LAQA & CO come from?
Well, LAQA & CO. is just really fun to say…pronounced: “lacquer” and CO. Say it fast ten times, it makes sense! And, of course we have to represent all our fab artists with the & CO!
How did you come up with the nail polish pens and why should we use pens vs. traditional bottle polishes?
Gina wanted to create a pen because we could not find one in the market that we were happy with. We pride ourselves on having up-to-date (check out our fall colors- Nookie and Toff), fun colors not to mention that all of our artwork is created by up and coming artists who get a percentage of proceeds. The pen is easy to use, quick to clean and dries so fast it is perfect for the girl on the go! We do our nails on the NYC subway platform! Really! We continue to strive to bring innovative products to the market and as always urge you to keep the box as it is a mini, affordable piece of art!
Can you give us some tips on getting the perfect mani on-the-go with the LAQA & CO nail polish pens?
Here’s the jist:
First give it a wee shake, then the colored end a push. You might need to pump it 7 or 8 times to get it going. SO PATIENCE IS YOUR FRIEND.
For the virgin user, try it out somewhere stable. Just till you get the hang of it-then feel free to take it anywhere. REALLY, ANYWHERE!
And to get a feel for it-happy-streak-free nails come when there’s a good amount of polish on the brush. So get a nice glob on there and start painting a few centimeters from the cuticle-so yah know, user your judgment.
Oh, and after if the bristles get a bit stiff, just give it a little once over with our equally awesome, & sold separately LAQA & CO remover pads.
Are there special ingredients used in your pens and pads that are better for us, for our nails, and differentiate LAQA & CO. from other polishes and removers?
LAQA & CO. is 3Free and paraben free! It’s a quick drying polish with a high gloss finish! PLUS, our polish remover pads come 32 in a pack; they are vanilla scented with a grape seed finish-WE LOVE THEM!
And of course we had to ask-
Where is your favorite place to travel?
Anywhere with a beach! South East Asia is a fav!
Do you check or carry-on? Why?
Check. Cannot be bothered to carry even carry-on luggage!
In case you are wondering what color to try I’m using FancyPants!
Weird, Wacky and Whatever Wednesday's: Dry Lips No More!
My lips have been so dry lately so when I saw that Kelly Rutherford from Gossip Girl said that she uses Vitamin E capsules on her lips before bed I figured why not try it. This Gossip Girl knows what she is talking about! I am 3 days into this routine and my lips feel great. I just open the tip of a capsule and squeeze a small amount on my finger and apply on and around my lips. The taste is pretty gross but the results are worth it. You can purchase Vitamin E just about anywhere. I like the Nature Made brand. $12.99 for 100 capsules.
Not a believer yet? Here are proven benefits (from the American Academy of Dermatology) of Vitamin E:
Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, which means it fights against the skin cell damage believed to be caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules in the body that may harm cellular processes, and their presence in the skin is most often a result of exposure to pollution and ultraviolet rays from the sun. Because they work against free radicals — which many scientists believe contribute to signs of aging — antioxidants are often found in products advertised as anti-aging.
Beyond its effects as an antioxidant, vitamin E also is believed to protect skin from damage directly caused by ultraviolet rays. Your lips are often exposed to the sun and don’t contain the protective pigment melanin, so choosing a lip care product with vitamin E can help protect your lips during the day and possibly repair damage after the day is done. So, as an ingredient in lip balms, vitamin E may help you maintain the soft, youthful texture of your lips by reducing the signs of aging.
If you don’t want to put straight Vitamin E on your lips here are a few recommendations:
Just saw on twitter yesterday that there is yet ANOTHER reason to love the Dr. Dennis Gross Extra Strength Alpha Beta Peels - You can use them on your elbows, knees, heels and other rough spots to exfoliate!! How amazing is that!! I am going to use them tonight and will report back.
Four leading ladies shared their Age-Defying Tricks with Us Magazine -
Kelly Rutherford, 42- “At night, I use vitamin E capsules on my lips and put Aquaphor around my eyes to keep them from getting dry. Also, get a good night’s sleep and drink water!”. My trick? Air Repair Rescue Balm. I apply it around my eyes and lips at night.
Kristen Bell, 31- ” My mom always stressed the importance of sunscreen. I was using SPF 100 when I was 15.” My trick? In the mornings I always apply Supergoop! Save Face Serum SPF 30+ under my face lotion.
Christine Baranski, 59 - “I try to be moderate in my habits, and I certainly exercise. Be very positive!” My trick? Exercise at least four times a week! I mix it up between Physique 57 and Soul Cycle.
Angela Bassett, 53 - “My aesthetician, Mammie McDonald, from Mamie’s Skin Care in New York City, keeps my pores clear. ” My trick? Facials! The Bliss Triple Oxygen is my go to.
Fingers crossed my tricks work and I look as good as these ladies in my 40’s and 50’s!
I am having the worst time with my hair these days; it is so dry and dull. I decided if I ‘m having these issues others might be having the same problems so I decided to track down Philip B and see what he suggests for helping make the transition a smoother one going into this fall/winter season…Oh, I decided to ask him a few personal questions also, who doesn’t want a peak into the life of an international hair stylist!
First things first, why did you start your own product line?
I was stylist in Boston and later, Los Angeles. I became concerned about clients who were coming in with fried, over-processed hair that wouldn’t respond to regular conditioning treatments, so I began whipping up my own natural remedies at home which eventually turned into a full line of hair care treatments and products.
What products should we be using to help protect our hair with the cool weather coming?
Always the Detangling Toning Mist! It detangles, reduces frizz and static while enhancing shine! I also suggest the Katira Hair Masque. It works by filling in dry, damaged spots and creates a vibrant, healthy sheen.
Where is your favorite place to visit? Why? Where do you stay?
I travel all over the world and have many places that I love and are special to me, however if I had to choose a current favorite destination it would be Ibiza. I love the vibe & Energy, weather, and beauty of the island. I stay in a friend’s beach house when I visit.
We all hate to admit it but there are times when we are “over-served”-which is of course takes all the blame off us from drinking too much and blames the bartender. What can ad insult to injury is having to get on a plan with an overwhelming hangover. Here are my tips for managing a hangover thousands of miles in the air:
HYDRATE! HYDRATE! HYDRATE! Now people will tell you to go have a bloody mary or a mimosa which is typically is a great cure but not if you are getting on a plane. Flying already dehydrates a person so the most important thing you can do is to drink as much water/coconut water/G2 as your stomach can handle before, during and post flight.
Avoid Make-up-if you can get away with getting on the plan without make-up and with lots of moisturizer on your face and around your eyes you will look much better when you land I promise. Last time this happened to me I brought the Yes to Cucumber wipes and laid one over my eyes for the majority of the flight. It felt amazing and helped with the puffiness around my eyes.
David Kirsch B-12 Spray-Spray under your tongue before getting on the plane-it is amazing how much this helps! B-12 helps to block the amount of alcohol your body absorbs.
Bring your own Snacks-don’t leave it up to the airlines to make sure you have the snacks you need to settle your stomach. I encourage you to bring some watermelon or other water based fruits and crackers to get to your final destination.
Sleep-do not drink caffeine, do not stimulate your mind by watching tv just drink lots of water, have snack and then close your eyes and go to sleep. You will feel a million times better once you land.
Hope these help you because I can relate and there is nothing worse than traveling with a hangover.

What products should be used to move our skin to cooler temperatures?
Skin will tend to get a little dryer now so it’s important to: A- exfoliate off the dead cell build up from all that summer sun and B- look for moisture binding products that include hyaluronic acid and sodium PCA. Also, the skin may be a bit more sensitive in extreme climate change so the cleaner the product the better. Steer clear of parabens, petroleum and mineral oil!
What do you never leave home without product wise?
I cannot be without my Air Repair Rescue Balm or Facial Mist. The Balm has been referred to as “The Swiss Army Knife of beauty products”….it’s that versatile! I use it on my lips, cuticles, hand, feet, elbow as a sports salve, eye make up remover and that’s just for starters. The Mist is like a spray on moisturizer and toner all in one.
What do you think is the most important thing you can do for skin when you are traveling a lot? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate…Both inside and out. And, keep your hands off your face.
Where is your favorite place to visit? Why? Where do you stay?
Paris of course!!! I usually stay at the Hotel Montalembert right off the Boulevard St. Germain or a lovely little hotel in the 16th called the Regina De Passy.
Do you carry-on or check your luggage?
For business, I always carry-on. For leisure trips it depends where I’m going. Sometimes I indulge a little and bring more than I need but I always have an overnight bag that I keep with me on board just in case my luggage gets lost!

Weird, Wacky and Whatever Wednesday's: Portion Control
Portion control for beauty? Who knew. Size does matter! We tend to think “if a little is good, a lot must be great” but that isn’t the case. We’ve spent some time investigating the proper amount to use for each beauty product we have and compiled a handy list:
Foaming Cleanser - Serving Size: A Golf Ball
Exfoliating Scrub - Serving Size: A Quarter (Seems like a lot, right? Remember you’ve got to cover your entire face.)
Serum - Serving Size: A Pea (Serums are super concentrated. Use on problem areas.)
Night Cream - Serving Size: A Quarter
Under-Eye Cream- Serving Size: Half a Pea for Each Eye
Moisturizer with SPF- Serving Size: A Quarter (Your neck needs to be covered also!)
Shampoo - Serving Size: A Quarter (Too much shampoo and your hair will be dull and weighed down leaving you without any body.)
Daily Conditioner - Serving Size: A Quarter
Mousse- Serving Size: A Golf Ball
Gel - Serving Size: A Nickel
Shine Serum- Serving Size: Two Pears (Too much can make your hair look greasy.)
Styling Wax- Serving Size: A pea (If you over wax you are back in the shower shampooing again.)
I thought it would be funny to quiz Kate and Alexi and see if they knew the correct portion control. Outcome - Kate went 12 for 12, Alexi flunked!
Are you loving Pan Am like we are? The style! The sex! The mystery! Oh my!! What a glamorous lifestyle, we wish flying was still like episodes of Pan Am!
On Sunday’s episode they went to Berlin. Neither Alexi nor I have ever been to Berlin so we decided to do some research and outline the best flights, hottest hotels, food and the most visited sights of the city once divided by a wall… and of course have added Berlin to our bucket list of places to visit!
Flights in December are roughly $400 round trip! We found Orbitz had the cheapest flights.
I was sitting at my desk trying to think of a topic for my Monday’s pop-culture blog and I was doing my usual brainstorm about what TV shows I watched this past week, what magazines and newspapers I had read and I just kept coming back to how sad I was that Steve Jobs passed away, then it hit me! Who else has transformed the way we travel more than Steve Jobs? With the invention of the imacs, ipod, ipad, and iphone Steve Jobs and Apple have made traveling more pleasant, easier and possible to connect anywhere and everywhere.
Perfect Example: a good friend of mine just got back from traveling Bali for a month. Before she was leaving I told her to leave her phone behind or at least turn it off so she could really do the Eat, Pray, Love trip she had been planning for months. Now I realized that this didn’t and wasn’t going to happen due to the fact that every day she had new updates and pictures on facebook. At first I was disappointed she wasn’t immersing herself in her trip and was still using technology but then I realized how much I loved knowing she was safe-I am a worrier-and more importantly seeing all the places she was going while she was there.
Cut to yesterday she is catching me up on her trip and the first thing she said was “THANK GOD FOR MY IPHONE” she used it for money conversions, time changes, booking tours, rental cars and hotels, pictures, directions, music, connecting with people she met on her trip, I can go on and on. I can’t imagine how much her phone bill is going to be but that is a problem for another day. The bottom line is for all of us that love to travel we need to take a moment to thank Steve Jobs for everything he has done to help us travel!

So excited to be starting our Friday guest blog series with Dr. Dennis Gross. I don’t know about all of you but my skin is going crazy right now with all the weather changes. I figured it made sense to go right to the experts and find out what I need to look for in products and also find out which products are MUST HAVES to take my skin from summer into the cooler months!
What products should we be using to shift our skin from warm to cooler weather?
Look for products (All-In-One Cleanser + Toner) with the following ingredients to help repair summer sun-damaged skin because by the end of summer many women are dealing with the results of months of sun-exposure, including sunburn, peeling, redness, and dry skin.
Arbutin -Inhibits melanin production in the skin, lightening brown spots and discoloration caused by sun damage.
Quercetin -An Antioxidant that decreases inflammation and soothes skin (perfect for post-sun repair)
Bisabolol -An anti-inflammatory ingredient derived from Chamomile, it soothes redness and reduces inflammation.
What products do you never leave home without?
The Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel Travel Packettes. They firm the skin and cause a contraction of collagen for an instant firming effect. This product also reduces the appearance of puffiness and helps to remove excess fluid. They are packaged in individually wrapped packettes which makes them easy to slip in a travel bag (and also safe for airline security).
Where is your favorite place to visit? Why? Where do you stay?
I stay at the Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana to go skiing every year with my wife and children, which has amazing views and landscapes.
Do you carry-on or check luggage?
Carry on all the way, which doesn’t get me too far ahead when I am traveling with my four adventurous children and beautiful wife who usually like to check.
Thank you so much Dr. Gross! If you have any questions you want answered by experts please send me an email email@example.com.
